A 71-year-old Mumbai woman lost her life savings of ₹18.5 lakh after falling victim to an online scam while simply trying to order milk. The incident, reported from Wadala, highlights the growing menace of cyber fraud targeting elderly citizens.
According to police, the woman attempted to place an order for one litre of milk earlier this month through an online delivery service. Soon after, she received a call from a man identifying himself as Deepak, claiming to be a company executive. He sent her a link and instructed her to fill in personal details without disconnecting the call. The call lasted more than an hour, after which she hung up.
The next day, the same caller reached out again and gathered more details. Days later, during a routine visit to her bank, the woman was shocked to discover that ₹1.7 lakh had disappeared from one account. Further checks revealed that her other two bank accounts had also been completely emptied, bringing the total loss to ₹18.5 lakh.
Police say the fraudster gained access to her phone after she clicked the malicious link. A case has been registered, and investigations are underway.
