A 51-year-old jogger was seriously injured after being knocked down by a speeding white car in Malad West early Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 5:45 AM behind Infinity Mall, where Pooja Verma, a homemaker and seasoned morning jogger, was on her daily routine run with her husband.
According to Bangur Nagar police, Pooja was trailing about 30 metres behind her husband when the car, attempting to take a right turn, hit her. The impact caused serious injuries to her left shoulder, forehead, nose, and left knee. Her husband rushed her to a private hospital nearby, where doctors confirmed she had sustained multiple fractures. Her condition is currently stable.
Pooja, known in her locality for jogging every morning for the past ten years, became the latest victim in a growing number of road mishaps involving joggers and walkers in Mumbai’s early hours. The shocking accident has reignited calls for improved traffic monitoring and pedestrian safety, especially during the low-visibility hours before sunrise.
Police have registered a case against the unknown driver under Sections 281, 125(b), and 110 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby buildings and traffic intersections to trace the vehicle and bring the accused to justice.
The incident has raised concern among local residents and fitness groups, who are now urging stricter enforcement of speed limits and better surveillance in residential and commercial areas during early morning hours.
