A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded as a third-year JJ Hospital MBBS student died by suicide on June 8. The 22-year-old, a day scholar from Ghatkopar, was found hanging in a locked room at the Apna Boys Hostel on campus. Despite being rushed to Sir JJ Hospital, he was declared dead on arrival.
According to the JJ Marg police, the student entered the hostel when it was empty and used a nylon rope to hang himself from the ceiling fan. Authorities later confirmed he had been under severe academic pressure and facing financial struggles at home. He had earned an impressive All India Rank of 3155 in NEET UG and was known for his academic dedication.
Hospital officials described him as a bright, focused individual who had become noticeably withdrawn in recent months. His sudden death has reignited debate over the immense mental health burden faced by medical students.
The college dean expressed condolences and promised support to grieving students and the family. The incident underscores the urgent need for mental health reforms in medical colleges, including accessible counseling, stress management frameworks, and peer mentoring to support students silently battling emotional and psychological challenges.
