An Air India flight veers off runway at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on July 21, 2025, after landing amid heavy rain. The Kochi-to-Mumbai flight AI 2744, an A320 aircraft (VT-TYA), overshot the runway due to slippery conditions, resulting in three burst tyres and suspected engine damage.
Despite the runway excursion, the aircraft taxied safely to the terminal, and all passengers and crew disembarked unharmed. Emergency teams were promptly deployed, ensuring no casualties. Air India confirmed the incident, saying, “The aircraft has been grounded for checks. The safety of passengers and crew remains our top priority.”
The airport spokesperson noted minor damage to the main runway 09/27, which is under repair, while operations continue on secondary runway 14/32 to minimize disruptions.
This mishap highlights the challenges of landing during monsoon downpours and underscores the importance of emergency preparedness. Both Air India and CSMIA emphasized their commitment to safety while managing the situation efficiently.
Authorities are inspecting the aircraft and runway to assess the full extent of damage and ensure a safe return to normal operations. Passengers praised the crew for their calm and swift response during the incident.
