Marwadi shopkeeper in Mumbai’s Vikroli was allegedly assaulted by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers after he posted a WhatsApp status that they claimed insulted the Marathi community. The shocking incident, caught on camera, shows MNS men surrounding the shopkeeper, confronting him about his post, and allegedly thrashing him until he publicly apologized.
In the video, the frightened shopkeeper can be seen holding his ears and folding his hands as he apologized to the Marathi community. The MNS workers allegedly warned others against disrespecting Marathi culture and urged locals to boycott shops owned by those who insult Marathi people.
This attack follows a string of similar incidents where MNS workers have targeted individuals over the use of the Marathi language. Just days earlier, a food stall owner in Thane was assaulted for not speaking Marathi. A shopkeeper in Mira Road and an autorickshaw driver were also beaten in separate incidents. Although arrested, the accused were granted bail within hours.
MNS chief Raj Thackeray had previously urged his workers not to record videos while “taking action” against those insulting Marathi. Meanwhile, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis condemned the violence, stating that while Marathi deserves respect, violence in its name is unacceptable and strict action would be taken.
The repeated assaults by MNS workers have sparked outrage, raising concerns over law and order and the misuse of regional pride. The Marwadi shopkeeper incident highlights growing tensions between communities in Mumbai and the need for peaceful dialogue rather than violence.
