Tesla enters Indian market with the opening of its first showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), marking its much-anticipated debut in the world’s third-largest automobile market. Competing with luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and domestic players Tata Motors and Mahindra, Tesla aims to carve a niche in India’s premium EV segment.
Currently, Tesla plans to sell only the Model Y, with six units already shipped from its Shanghai plant. Deliveries are set to begin as early as next month. The company also plans to open a second showroom in New Delhi by the end of July, for which it has ramped up local hiring and secured warehouse space.
According to Tesla’s website, the Model Y will come in two variants: Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive. The base model offers a 500 km range and accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the long-range version delivers a 622 km range and does 0–100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Both feature nine speakers, a 15.4-inch touchscreen, and noise-reduction suspension.
The rear-wheel model is priced at ₹60.1 lakh, and the long-range at ₹67.8 lakh — higher than other markets due to India’s steep import duties, which delayed Tesla’s entry.
Tesla’s India-focused X account teased its arrival last Friday with a “Coming soon” post, signaling the start of an exciting chapter for EV enthusiasts.
